Every Spring and Fall, in cooperation with the local counties, the Virginia Cooperative Extension offices and MXI, NNSWCD holds Household Hazardous & Electronic Waste (HHW) Collection Events. HHW collections began in 2005 by the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) office of Northumberland & Lancaster counties. In 2008, Northern Neck SWCD joined in to partner with VCE to help grow these events. Westmoreland and Richmond Counties began participating in 2009 and 2010. In April of 2024, a milestone was achieved. Over 1 million pounds of household hazardous and electronic waste has been collected in the Northern Neck since 2005. This goal was achieved thanks to four localities, VCE offices and of course the residents and property owners.

What is a HHW Event?
NNSWCD typically conducts 7 HHW Collection Events from March through October. These events collect used and unwanted household hazardous materials such as household chemicals. Each of the four local counties will host a HHW event in the Spring and in the Fall. Richmond County holds one event a year and that is during the Fall. Each event is strictly for residents and/or property owners of the county the event is being held.
These events are drive-thru, in which residents are instructed to remain in their vehicles and allow event staff to unload any items accepted for disposal. Items such as a gasoline, will be emptied from personal gas cans and returned upon request.
